Harmonisation of Electronic Health Record systems: the use of Medanets is expanding in Southwest Finland

In the wellbeing services county of Southwest Finland, the harmonisation of Electronic Health Record systems enables broader use of the Medanets app across the region’s specialised healthcare and primary ward services. New expansions are being implemented, especially in psychiatry and home hospital care. Together, the system upgrades and the expanded use of Medanets will support more seamless and streamlined patient care throughout the care process.

Awaited expansion to improve patient safety

Medanets’ mobile solutions have been in use across 60 wards in Turku University Hospital as well as in the primary care wards in Kaarina, Raisio, Lieto and Paimio within the region for a long time. The initial implementations took place in 2015-2016.

The Medanets app has been found to be useful in supporting nursing and improving patient safety in the Turku University Hospital, which advocated for a wider implementation of the solution.

Over the next year, the use of Medanets will be extended to a total of 30 new wards and 10 home hospital units. One of the most anticipated implementations will take place at the new Compass Hospital for Psychiatry, opening in October 2024, where psychiatric nursing staff will finally have access to the long-awaited Medanets app. The psychiatric wards at the Turku University Hospital have already had positive user experiences with the documentation of ECT treatments using the app. The neuromodulation unit has done most of its documentation work with the Medanets app already for a longer time.

A single solution for all units

All existing and new units will use a unified solution package that includes Medanets Observation Values, Early Warning Score, Medication and Patient Card. In the future, if the wellbeing services county acquires new features for the Medanets app, they will be implemented across all units. ‘Medanets supports the nurse throughout the patient’s care process, from start to finish,’ says Ville Jalo.

The Medanets solution delivers proven benefits to units and supports nursing workflows. The wider the implementation, the more comprehensive the benefits:

  • Standardised practices: The mobile app, used across all units, enables consistent care practices and uniform data collection. This reduces errors and deviations in care practices, improving patient safety. Consistently documented patient information supports the continuity of care.
  • Smooth nursing workflows: When nursing staff use the same solution across different wards, moving between units becomes easier.
  • Strategic development: With the entire wellbeing services county using the same mobile solution, it becomes easier to collect data, track usage and develop solutions that benefit the entire region. A centralised solution enables faster, targeted updates, simplifies the monitoring and comparison of care quality between units, and supports the effective implementation of regional care strategies.
