”I consider Medanets absolutely essential in hospital-at-home”

Hospital-at-home services in Southwest Finland report high satisfaction. Aligned systems across the entire region create the foundation for consistent, comprehensive and patient-centred care. Regular feedback from healthcare professionals who use these systems daily is essential. At the Medanets User Days in early February, Designer, Registered Nurse and MSc (Health Sciences) Ville Jalo presented the results of a user satisfaction survey conducted in his region.

Following the national health and social care reform, the hospital-at-home services in Southwest Finland were integrated under Turku University Hospital. A single EHR system was introduced across the region. At the same time, Medanets was implemented in hospital-at-home services with the same functionalities as elsewhere in the university hospital.

According to Ville Jalo, deploying systems that are already proven effective across the entire region creates opportunities to develop nursing practice in a more consistent, holistic and patient-centred direction. The survey results suggest that the Medanets users share this view.

The app most often receives good or excellent ratings

The rollout of Medanets in the hospital-at-home services began during 2024 and progressed in phases. According to Ville Jalo, the implementation was successful. During 2025, the number of entries documented via the Medanets app has continued to increase. Documentation volumes are aligned with the nature of work in hospital-at-home units.

In the survey, 100% of hospital-at-home respondents reported carrying the mobile device with them for most of their shift. 90% felt motivated to use mobile documentation, and 87% used it frequently during each shift. 78% considered mobile documentation necessary in nursing practice. Most users rated different sections of the app as good or excellent. The feedback from hospital-at-home services does not differ significantly from responses received from inpatient wards at Turku University Hospital.

Up-to-date information flow is key

According to Ville Jalo, hospital-at-home services particularly require a tool that provides nurses with a comprehensive yet concise overview of the patient’s care. Access to a full EHR system is not feasible at every visit.

In open text responses, the most valued feature of the tool was the immediate transfer of information from the patient’s home to nurses and doctors working at the hospital-at-home office. Users also appreciated being able to view patients’ contact details, addresses and door entry codes within the app.

Respondents expressed interest in additional functionalities, including access to clinical photos and laboratory results via mobile. These features have already been procured for Turku University Hospital and will soon be introduced to hospital-at-home services.

“I consider Medanets absolutely essential in hospital at home care,” one respondent wrote, emphasising the importance of timely and up-to-date documentation. Another commented:

The implementation went extremely well. The app is easy to use, well tailored to our needs and therefore clear. Documentation has definitely become faster. Medication administration is documented at the exact time the medication is given, and there is no need to rely on memory or write notes on paper. Patients often ask about their vital signs from previous days, and these are very easy to review in the app.
