Experienced IT professional Petri joined our team at the beginning of the year. Over the course of his long career, he’s coded at Nokia across various mobile architectures and worked on a wide range of projects at Haltian, among others.
Despite his extensive experience, Petri is getting to learn plenty of new things with us, as he’s now focusing on the backend, the server side of development.
“What really drew me to Medanets was the opportunity to learn something new. For more than 20 years I’ve worked almost exclusively on user-facing frontend solutions. I was in discussions with a couple of other companies as well, but the chance to broaden my skills won me over. Healthcare is new to me too, as I’ve barely had any previous exposure to the field,” he says.
A couple of familiar faces at Medanets also influenced his decision. “One of them, Hannu, goes all the way back to our university days. And from the very first interview, I was left with a genuinely positive impression of the whole company,” Petri explains. Although he suspects that the company Christmas party taking place on the day after his interview may have added a certain glow to the atmosphere, the same upbeat spirit has continued since he started.
“The work is nicely challenging. I’ve definitely had the new learning experiences I was hoping for. And that server side is no lightweight bit of software wizardry,” Petri laughs.
A team bowling day in the making
A self-confessed lifelong tech enthusiast, Petri spends much of his spare time tinkering with computers.
“I’m slightly amused every day that I get paid to do things I’d happily be doing anyway. It all started when our school got a brand-new Apple IIe back in the day. After that, I never had any doubt about what I’d be when I grew up.”
He does have other hobbies, too. “A couple of years ago, after a 30-year break, I swapped golf for bowling again, and now I compete at club level. I’m in what you might call a 107% enthusiasm phase, and people around me have certainly noticed. If you ever need to find me outside work, Alppila Bowling Alley is the first place to look. I’m roughly back to the level I was at 30 years ago, but the aim is to climb higher while I still can. At some point I fully intend to organise a bowling afternoon, with coaching, for the whole company, so consider yourselves warned!”
